Beyond The Great American Songbook (John Muriello and David Gompper)

By | Published on Tuesday 13 August 2013

Baritone John Muriello and pianist David Gompper partner up to provide an hour of strictly American cabaret songs in the beautiful surroundings of a New Town church. They started off with ‘Hyphenated Harriet’ by Sondheim, who they literally bow to. It’s followed by ‘Bewitched’ and ‘Another Rhumba’, getting the set off to a hit-laden beginning, before more obscure choices from Marc Blitzstein, Pearson Thomas and others. Muriello delivers all of the songs, from the lovestruck ‘Nevertheless I Laugh’ to the ghoulish ‘Penny Candy’, with real humour and verve. It’s thrilling to hear explicitly erotic songs like ‘Toothbrush Time’ sung on an altar. A fun and enjoyable, if somewhat niche, way to spend an afternoon.

St Andrew’s and St George’s West, until 8 Aug, 12.30pm.
