1,000 Suns (Gaffball Productions)

By | Published on Friday 30 August 2013

Set amidst the ruins of America, 100 years after World War 3, this piece follows a group of teenagers as they struggle to cope with their dangerous environment, tyrannical or missing parents and their identities. The story works because it is driven by exceptionally well-acted, believable and likeable characters. The plot is straightforward; not shallow, but focused. The minimalist set hints at what this world might look like while effectively leaving plenty to the imagination. However, there is occasionally too much sentiment; particularly when it comes to the songs which, while beautifully sung, have cliché-ridden, melodramatic lyrics. Despite this, there’s real heat, and this, along with a perfect structure, sees ‘1000 Suns’ on tremendous form.
