The Seven Deadly Sins

By | Published on Saturday 31 August 2013

A stage divided by a huge rectangle of Hollywood dressing-room lights, stage-left a golden bed beneath a dancing performer who has fallen slave to her desires, and stage-right, her home and family as they struggle through economic depression. Visually, the opera was delectable – if lacking somewhat in the quirky surrealness of a Brechtian production. Nadine Livingston’s impeccable voice slid with ease over strings of melancholic notes, showcasing Weill’s sumptuous compositions with flawless skill, and Kirsty Pollock was the embodiment of grace and gutsiness equally. A true highlight was the barbershop quartet which accompanied the anecdote for ‘gluttony’, which was highly complex but executed marvellously. At times, the orchestra drowned the voices – which should be addressed – but this was an enjoyable and pleasing production.
