Am I (LCP Dance Theatre)

From the first moments, it’s apparent that this is a remarkable performance. Just how remarkable only becomes clear after 45 breathless and mind-blowing minutes, that transport the audience into the dark world of human trafficking and the subsequent desolation. Inspired by Sophie Hayes’ recent book ‘Trafficked’, the nine performers illustrate just how easily one can become trapped in this world. The victim and the trafficker often merge identities, and the group actively attempt to raise the audience’s consciousness towards this gruesome phenomenon. The stunning choreography (bravo, Joanna Puchala), the impeccable execution and the power of the visual imagery is utterly paralysing. “Dance stops trafficking!” they advertise. For me, their dance stopped my heartbeat.

Spotlites @ Merchants Hall, until 24 Aug (not 11, 18), 12.30pm.
