Rising (Aakash Odedra)

By | Published on Thursday 22 August 2013

Dancer Aakash Odedra performed four pieces by different choreographers, putting a contemporary twist on classical Kathak Indian dance. The first, choreographed by Odedra himself, was jaw-droppingly good. If you blinked you’d have missed a move – fast, precise and vibrant, it seemed as if Odedra would not be able to top the first piece. This was wrong, for every piece stood out in its own right. The second piece choreographed by Akram Khan was animalistic and eerie, the third by Russell Maliphant was innovative and gripping and the fourth, by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, used light in inventive and unique ways. It is as if Odedra floats on air when he dances, contorting, spinning and creating shapes with such ease. Fresh, exciting and truly amazing.
