After Ever Happily (Taking The Mick Theatre Company)

There’s a nice idea at the core of this play; use fairy tale tropes with a twist, as a psychologist interviews a patient who claims to be Red Riding Hood, finding out her secrets and something about himself, too. Though, unfortunately, the writing isn’t quite as clever as it thinks it is. The big twist is predictable from early on, and isn’t executed effectively; the claustrophobic setting add tension, but so much of the “action” takes place sitting down, that most of the audience miss a great deal of nuance. Ultimately, it’s just a bit thin; there’s nothing here other than that nice idea and that predictable twist. It needs more meat on the bones.
