Bassett (Flatpacktheatre)

Set in the town known for its role in recent military repatriations, ‘Bassett’ explores many of the problems facing contemporary Britain while staying within the claustrophobic confines of a schoolroom. The talented young cast tackles the heavy material head on, tempering the taut atmosphere with funny, genuine teenage interactions until a final, shocking crescendo of fury. The play’s greatest weakness is the unexplained premise of leaving the students locked in together, but this flaw is soon overshadowed by the intensity and realism with which the performers grapple with issues ranging from the wars in the Middle East to xenophobia and homophobia at home. No one is entirely wrong or right in this powerful, fraught play, and therein lies its truth.
