Charlie Dupré Presents… The Stories of Shakey P (Charlie Dupré)

By | Published on Thursday 22 August 2013

Hamlet, Othello, Richard III, all in rap; probably not everyone’s cup of tea. Charlie Dupré’s show is a thoughtful reflection on the similarities between rap and Jacobean tragedy, which notably includes a calculated, considered retelling of ‘Othello’ in the style of Eminem’s ‘Stan’. Unfortunately Dupré lacks the charisma and comic-timing necessary to make this an entertaining hour. One can’t shake the feeling that it’s all being taken a little too seriously, most raps are intersected with an awkward, vaguely academic explanation of what’s coming next; and though I’m sure the mute, expressionless musicians onstage are talented people, the out of time pairing of rap lyrics and clunkily played instruments does not showcase this in the slightest. Nice idea, not the best show.

Just the Tonic at The Caves, until 25 Aug (not 13), 1.00pm.
