Desdemona – A Play About A Handkerchief (International Collegiate Theatre Festival)

A polished performance of ‘Desdemona: A Play About a Handkerchief’ revealing the true desires and personal identities of the women behind Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’. Paula Vogel modernises the character of Desdemona, granting her an interesting blend of naivety and sexual liberalism. In truth, Desdemona is rather irritating, and Dana Ernest did not quite succeed in capturing the believability of the character. Emilia, however, played by Robin Rubeo, was really able to engage the audience’s sympathies and allegiance, with her carefully measured and stunningly sincere acting. The introduction of the energetic Bianca played by Clare Bawarski provided a welcome break from the previous, rather stagnant, domestic scenes with Desdemona and Emilia. A professional and reasonably enjoyable piece of theatre.
