Eugenie Grandet (Hartshorn – Hook Productions)

One of Balzac’s less scandalous heroines, Eugenie Grandet is a woman of morals, and this adaptation by Jonathan Choat follows her as she transforms from a fiery girl into a cautious adult, burned by a fickle love. Apparently it is the first theatrical incarnation of the story in English, and it’s not surprising it hasn’t been staged before; the slow-moving story does not lend itself well to a theatrical setting, which requires something snappier. Having said that, the play’s pace does pick up as it progresses, and the cast uniformly deliver multi-layered, intense performances. The addition of a cellist to the cast provides haunting and poignant music that augments the action nicely, too. One for fans of French literature.
