Europa, Our First Migrant (Replico Productions)

By | Published on Monday 26 August 2013

In the Greek myth, Middle Eastern princess Europa is seduced by a god in the shape of a bull and transported to Crete, eventually giving her name to a whole continent. This retelling takes the story as a departure point from which to gently explore ideas of identity, immigration and language. The three hard-working actors perform in a warm pantomime style which feels rough around the edges, but seems suited to the play’s skewed sense of time and place. That said, the overall tone is uneven, an imperfect blurring of the company’s daft humour with snatches of poetry and sometimes overly-informative dialogue. In that sense, it’s perhaps an appropriate reflection of the messy origins of Western culture.

Italian Cultural Institute, until 24 Aug, 5.00pm.
