For Their Own Good (United Artists)

By | Published on Saturday 31 August 2013

There are many shows about death, yet not many, it seems, deal with it in the same way as ‘For Their Own Good’ does; it is both funny and saddening in a way that accurately reflects the mundane nature of life and its relation to death. In many ways, it is a very clever play; Claire Browne, Harry Trow and Ana Siegrot’s props, for example, are a wonder simply by themselves, plus, the unfolding of the play, the way it develops, if clearly intelligently thought out. The little interludes that are woven throughout are somewhat gratuitous, yet overall, one grows to subtly care for the characters. An affecting play to the very end.

Summerhall, until 24 Aug, 4.30pm.
