Forest (Tripped Theatre Company)

By | Published on Thursday 8 August 2013

‘Forest’ is a tale of naïve and innocent friendship in a similar style to Kenneth Grahame’s ‘The Wind in the Willows’. A child known as Little One wakes up in an unfamiliar forest and tries to make friends with the animals she meets, until the death of Tawny Owl helps her to understand who her real friends are. Unfortunately the story is daft and the acting is tedious, especially at the moments when Red Squirrel doles out supposedly meaningful advice to Little One. There are ideas here about friendship, jealousy, vulnerability and betrayal, but they are pushed further than they can go. It’s suitable for 12+, but only young children could find those painted faces appealing.

Sweet Grassmarket, until 11 Aug, 6.55pm.
