How To Be A Modern Marvel (Cie du Veilleur)

By | Published on Monday 26 August 2013

‘How To Be A Modern Marvel’ is an examination of the state of modern womanhood… and a confusing one at that. The awkward audience attends the initiation of a new modern marvel; a sales pitch flogging the 1960s ideal of complete, successful womanhood, incorporating employment, marriage, children and dinner preparation, all through the medium of Tupperware. However, this wordy and uncomfortable production required a post-show discussion to elaborate on some of the subtler points. The argument itself felt dated, with contemporary women facing much more multifaceted problems than those posed in this allegorical flashback. The performances themselves were adept and elegant, and the trio of actors handled the punchy sales pitch proficiently. I just wasn’t sold on it.

Institut français d’Ecosse, until 26 Aug, 4.30pm.
