Magic Number 6 (Crooked Hand Productions)

By | Published on Saturday 31 August 2013

Focussing on the occasionally rocky relationship between Patrick McGoohan and Lew Grade during the making of The Prisoner, ‘Magic Number 6’ never quite gave us the sense of peeping behind the curtain. While Rob Leeson gives an assured, sauve performance as McGoohan, we only get a tiny glimpse of the obsessive reality behind his mask, and Colin Woods’ Grade comes across as a bit of a wet blanket, rather than a scenery chewing TV impresario. The script is written with loving attention to detail and Karen Gordon’s Miss Cartwright is a delightful comic relief, but there’s no sense of revelation or conflict. Without a driving force, this play is lacking the tension to elevate it above the rest.
