No Direction (No Direction Productions)

By | Published on Saturday 17 August 2013

No Direction, a new piece by Albert Welling and featuring Ronnie Toms, is a peculiar beast. Highlighting the apparent break-down between two actors rehearsing a new script, ‘No Direction’ plays with the audience’s perspective to great effect. The real drama of the men and the script they are enacting intertwines constantly, creating a surreal effect where one questions everything they say; and so one might, such are the personal inadequacies of the characters. Although intriguing, No Direction struggles to fill the full hour, at times clearly stretched beyond its natural limit, while some narrative application is too heavy-handed compared to the script’s other subtleties. With some refinement this could be very good, but it isn’t there yet.

Assembly George Square, until 26 Aug, 2.50pm.
