Pugni Di Zolfo (Fists Of Sulfur) (Maurizio Lombardi)

By | Published on Sunday 25 August 2013

After a rare defeat, boxer Vincenzo reminisces about his childhood, when he was shaped and toughened by a brutal life labouring in a Sicilian Sulphur mine. Writer and actor Maurizio Lombardi is an intense, impressive performer, physically imposing yet capable of the most delicate gestures. He’s as convincing as an aged grandmother or an asthmatic child as he is when depicting the hulking fighter. The story’s staged with understated skill, letting the script’s densely poetic imagery speak for itself, but like an out- of- shape athlete, there’s fat here that could be trimmed. Lingering perhaps too long on each exquisite detail, the play suffers from awkward pacing and slow development. Though terrifically performed, this never quite lands a knockout blow.
