The Last Picasso (John Watts)

By | Published on Wednesday 14 August 2013

Certainly surreal, ‘The Last Picasso’ follows writer Pete Asher, who, while succumbing to a terminal illness has a strange out of body meeting with Pablo Picasso. The only actor on stage is John Watts, who plays Asher, and who sits at a table most of the time and reads the lines from a script, the other actors are represented only on the projected screen. The play is broken up by the occasional song, in which Watts is accompanied by talented backup singers. The script, however, was stilted and riddled with unnatural dialogue, which when read straight from the page, was passionless to listen to. A bit of a vanity project, it would seem; perhaps Picasso should have stayed in the other realm.
