Zimbabwe Sculptures (Assembly)

By | Published on Saturday 10 August 2013

A minimalist line-up of exotic sculpture awaits in the George Square Theatre. The works in ‘Zimbabwe Sculptures’  often make use of the contrast between the smooth and the rough, to great effect. Sadly, this serpentine heavy collection cannot be fully appreciated due to the positioning of the sculptures – they are mostly in rows with their ‘backs’ to a wall. However, there are gems to be found; Esau Karura uses rustic chisel work to create figures with playful characters, and Soulot Ziire’s ‘Dreaming Pair’ is as abstract as it is delightful. An exhibition festival-goers might discover rather than aim for; but if you find yourself hanging around with an hour to kill, prepare to be charmed.

Assembly George Square, until 26 Aug, 10.00am.
