Get Conceptual (Michael Salu and Catherine Anyango)

Take the spiffing setting of Hendrick’s Carnival Of Knowledge, add one wisdom-inducing complimentary G&T, and the urge to ‘get conceptual’ comes fairly naturally. Far less hands-on than the title might suggest, this talk from Granta’s Michael Salu and the RCA’s Catherine Anyango, is essentially a lesson in the aesthetics of horror and the abject. Taking their cue from works such as ‘Dawn Of The Dead’, Conrad’s ‘Heart Of Darkness’ and even real crime photos, the pair delve into using the Carnivalesque body, the gendered grotesque self, to create art. A tad thrown-together in structure, this event nevertheless opens up puss-leaking wounds and the sometimes hard-to-stomach realities of making beautiful visuals from ‘The horror! The horror!’ of human bodies.
