Wuthering Heights (Director: Peter McMaster, Performers: Gary Gardiner, Nick Anderson, Murray Wason)

By | Published on Sunday 31 August 2014

As I came out of the theatre I heard someone say this production was “a lot of piss and shit”. I’m not sure why I reacted so violently (albeit silently, in my head) to this assertion. Probably because I thought it was transcendental. As the play opens with its four-man cast dancing wildly to Kate Bush (and I would really like them to teach me the dance routine), you become aware that this production of ‘Wuthering Heights’ is not a dramatisation of a classic novel. A kaleidoscope of methods, including physicality, personal anecdotes, metaphorical and literal nakedness, are used to meditate on themes of fear, desire, life. Penetrating theatre. Or it could just be a lot of piss and shit.

Summerhall, until 24 Aug.
