Salford University student Rio Bauer won the Chortle Student Comedy Award at a Fringe-based final yesterday, becoming the first woman to be awarded the prize. So hurrah for that.

Bauer, who says she had only done five previous gigs before entering the talent contest, beat off competition from fellow finalists Nathan Willcock, Adam Todd, Conor Neville, Tim Renkow, Evelyn Mok, Matilda Wnek and Richard Perry at a final at the Pleasance Courtyard yesterday, impressing the judges, says Chortle’s own report, “with a surreal set, substantially about helpful ghosts”.

Bauer picks up a two grand prize, and follows past winners like Joe Lycett, Lloyd Langford and Tom Deacon into the Chortle student stand-up hall of fame. The comedy site’s top man Steve Bennett said: “It was a really diverse bill tonight, with all manner of comedy styles being executed with skill and originality, making it tough to choose a winner. Rio is an original voice, and simply made the judges laugh more than anyone else”.
