ThreeWeeks Quick Quiz: Gordon Winter
Brighton 08 index - Preview - Interviews - eDaily + Reviews - About the Brighton Festival

Brighton Fringe people answer the ThreeWeeks Q&A quick quiz. Today, Gordon Winter, one of the people behind the Official Brighton Fringe Masked Ball, which takes place this Friday (23 May) at the Old Ship Hotel.

1. Tell us about your show in no more than 30 words.
The legendary Kroon Kat Lounge is a regular monthly retro live jazz fingerclicking cabaret at Komedia. Our Masked May Ball at The Old Ship Hotel this Friday is a glamourous extravaganza!

2. What's your role in it?
I'm co-promoter and booker, seeking out the finest live acts...our floorshow on Friday features swing jazz bigband The Hepkat Huzzahs led by Miss Nicky Mitchell, with the vocal talents of soul belter Tracy Jane Sullivan, plus the larger-than-life Miss Dolly Rocket, and top tribute This-is-Elvis. We've got the fabulous highkicking Can-Can Feelgood Floozies troupe...there's 9 of them! Try your luck at roulette, blackjack and craps in our fullsize fun casino!

3. Why are you bringing the show to the Brighton Fringe this year?
We host the marvellous Masked Ball as the official finale party for the Fringe. It's in the most glorious, historic, chandeliered, ballroom in Brighton. We encourage swank, stardust and style. Our guests wear all gowns 'n' basques, spats 'n' cravats and most importantly masks to flirt behind! Escape the mud and anoraks and enter a dreamworld... this is putting on the Ritz and enjoying the Vegas sounds of Sinatra, Nina Simone and Billie Holliday with maybe a touch of Otis Redding thrown into the mix...

4. What are you most looking forward to about the Fringe?
I love the variety...on Sunday I saw two free dance events on the seafront, including tango dancing on bungee ropes! I then went to Joogleberry for the brilliant one man theatrical biog 'Call Mr Robeson', and on to the Hanbury for Maddie's chat show. I finished the evening at Sirens which was deliciously saucy... only in Brighton can you celebrate the female form at a strip club full of dykes! Is it politically correct? I think we've moved into an era of tongue-in-cheek, post-ironic empowerment... it's great to see the gals keeping fit!

5. What are you least looking forward to?
I'm disappointed that everywhere is drab, even the swanky Hanbury is populated by folk in casual attire. No one dresses up at Spiegeltent... it could be a lovely venue but the clientele give it a Glastonbury refugee feel... it's all cagoules and denim and dampness. This is why the Masked Ball is forced to be a standard bearer for sartorial elegance...why dress down when you can dress UP and strut your stuff THIS FRIDAY!

The Official Brighton Fringe Masked Ball takes place this Friday, 23 May - tickets are £35 in advance.
